There’s a line I keep coming back to, loosely attributed to Alex Karp, that I think about more than most business advice: be useful before you have a title.
Umi, You never cease to amaze me! You write with clarity and power. You are quick to recognize patterns, it seems. You have given everyone here lots of wisdom. I agree with you, in many ways. The person who instinctively knows how to fix issues without asking for a reward, the person who stays steady, perhaps like the tortoise in The Tortoise and the Hare? The relationship descriptions really capture that joy of finding, someone. But not the right one. But, you found gaps. Not labeling anything is wise. Just do the work. I always learn so much from you and your experiences. It’s always a joy.
I've been having some ups and downs at work since a forced transfer, but this resonates so much with me. I've always worked best when I could fix what needed fixing, and the titles came along the way. Now I'm stuck in a group that doesn't understand what creating value is, and I have to ask for a promotion despite fixing all the problems - truly a different arena for me. Thanks for sharing!
Not many people can seamlessly conflate Palantir work culture with relationship advice, but I gotta respect the creative crossover. Thanks Umi.
